If your system discourages outside referrals
We know that many hospital-employed physicians are directed to keep referrals in network, and we are not asking anyone to go against their employer.
Patients can choose their own provider. If it is simpler, let your patient know that specialist adult neuro speech therapy exists locally and point them at the sheet below. We do not require a formal referral to book an evaluation unless their insurance does.
For patients and families
You do not have to wait for a doctor to suggest us. Most people who come here found us themselves and then asked their physician for the referral.
If your hospital or your doctor’s practice tends to keep referrals inside its own system, that is not a rule you have to accept. You can choose where you get outpatient therapy.
How to ask
Print the sheet below, or open this page on your phone in the appointment, and say something like:
“I would like a referral for outpatient speech therapy at Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy in Cherry Hill. They specialize in adults with neurologic conditions. Can you send it to fax (856) 288-1672?”
If your insurance does not require a referral, you can skip that step entirely and book an evaluation yourself.

What referring clinicians hear back
A referring physician or discharge planner's comment goes here. Insight has strong patient reviews but we did not find published feedback from a referral source. Sophia: if a neurologist, ENT or discharge planner has said something usable and is willing to be quoted, this is the slot.
Questions from referring clinicians
What information do you need on a referral?
The patient's name, date of birth and phone number; the referring provider's name, NPI and contact details; the relevant diagnosis and ICD-10 code; and what you want assessed — speech, language, cognition, voice, swallowing, or a combination.
If you have them, recent imaging, operative notes or a previous swallow study report are genuinely useful. If you do not, send the referral anyway and we will chase what we need.
What happens after you receive a referral?
Our front desk contacts the patient directly to schedule and to verify their insurance benefits, so your office does not have to.
We confirm receipt back to your office. After the evaluation we send you our findings and the plan of care, and we keep you updated at discharge. If the patient does not respond to our attempts to reach them, we will tell you rather than let the referral quietly disappear.
My hospital tells me not to refer outside our system. What can I do?
This is common, and we understand the position it puts you in.
Patients are free to choose their provider. In practice, most of our referrals from within health systems begin with the patient asking their physician for a specific outside referral, rather than the physician proposing one.
If it is easier for you, tell the patient that specialist outpatient adult neuro speech therapy exists locally and let them come to us themselves. We do not need a formal referral to schedule an evaluation unless their insurance requires one.
Do you accept referrals for patients still in a facility?
Yes. We regularly take referrals from hospital and skilled nursing discharge planners for patients transitioning home.
Insight was founded specifically because people were being discharged with significant communication and swallowing needs and no specialist follow-up. Send the referral before discharge and we will have the appointment arranged for after they get home.
Which patients are a good fit — and which are not?
Good fit: adults and teenagers with speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice or swallowing difficulties, particularly of neurologic origin.
Not a fit: children. We treat adults and teens only, so pediatric patients need a different referral.
If you are not sure, call us before you send it. We would rather have a two-minute conversation than have your patient wait for an appointment we cannot help with.
