You have been doing weekly therapy. You are working hard, but progress feels slow. Or you have hit a plateau. Or your goals are simply bigger than what can realistically be addressed in one or two sessions a week.
The question people ask us is: what if we could dedicate a concentrated period of time to this?
That is exactly why we built the intensive program.
More therapy is not necessarily better. More intentional therapy can be.
An intensive gives us five things a weekly schedule cannot:
- Focus. Concentrated effort, instead of treatment spread across months.
- Practice. More repetitions and more chances to apply skills.
- Adjustment. Your clinician can modify treatment continually as you respond.
- Carryover. Deliberate practice taking skills from therapy into everyday life.
- Measurement. A clear baseline, and a clear picture of where you got to.
The goal is not more therapy. It is more life.
Your intensive might focus on:
Communication
- taking part in conversations
- expressing your needs
- communicating with family
- returning to social activities
Cognition
- managing schedules
- remembering medications
- returning to work
- organizing daily tasks
- navigating the community
Swallowing
- improving safety
- confidence around meals
- individualized swallowing goals

An intensive may be right for you if…
- You are motivated to actively participate in therapy
- You have specific goals you would like to make progress toward
- You are looking for a more concentrated approach than weekly therapy
- You or your loved one has experienced a stroke, brain injury, neurological condition or swallowing disorder
- You are medically stable and able to commit to the schedule your program requires
- You are ready to make therapy a priority
Your intensive schedule
-
Your first day
Comprehensive evaluation and baseline measurement, goal setting, and a personalized treatment plan.
-
During your intensive
Focused therapy sessions, functional practice, progress monitoring, adjustments based on how you respond, and home and caregiver carryover.
-
At the end
Progress review and next-step recommendations — graduation into continued therapy, a maintenance plan, or independent carryover where that is appropriate.
Why not just continue with weekly therapy?
Because sometimes your goals require momentum. Traditional therapy can be incredibly effective. An intensive is a different tool for a different moment — usually the moment when steady progress has stopped feeling like progress.
If weekly therapy is working for you, keep doing it. That is most of what we do.
From people who did it
“It is never too late for therapy. After a 2021 stroke, 2022 heavy therapy and ‘graduation’, we decided to try therapy again in 2025. They gave us aids to improve memory. Chore assignments, giving my husband a better self worth.”
Questions about intensive programs
How is an intensive different from weekly therapy?
Traditional therapy spreads treatment across months. An intensive concentrates it into a defined block of weeks.
That changes five things. You get more repetitions and more chances to apply a skill. Your clinician can adjust treatment continually rather than waiting a week to see what happened. Practice carries over into daily life while it is still fresh. Progress is measured tightly from a clear baseline. And there is momentum, which matters more than people expect.
More therapy is not automatically better. More intentional therapy can be.
Who is a good candidate?
An intensive suits you if you are motivated to take an active part, you have specific goals you want to move toward, and you are medically stable enough to commit to the schedule.
Most participants have had a stroke, a brain injury, a neurological condition or a swallowing disorder. Many come to us after being discharged from traditional therapy, or after hitting a plateau.
It is a real commitment of time and energy. That is the point, and it is also why we talk it through properly before anyone enrols.
What happens during the program?
Day one is a comprehensive evaluation, baseline measurement, goal setting and a personalized treatment plan.
During the intensive you have focused therapy sessions, functional practice, ongoing progress monitoring, adjustments based on how you respond, and structured carryover work for you and your caregiver at home.
At the end there is a progress review and next-step recommendations — continuing therapy, a maintenance plan, or independent carryover where that is appropriate.
Does insurance cover intensive programs?
Intensives are offered as self-pay packages at a fixed price, so you know the total cost before you start rather than session by session.
Depending on your plan, some of the component services may be reimbursable through out-of-network benefits. We can provide documentation to submit. Talk to us before you enrol and we will help you work out what your plan will and will not do.
You receive a Good Faith Estimate in writing before the program begins.
Can an intensive be done by video?
Some can, and it depends which one. Select programs are available virtually where that is clinically appropriate.
The aphasia and brain injury intensives translate reasonably well to video for much of their content. The dysphagia intensive includes hands-on electrical stimulation, so it needs the office.
We will tell you honestly at the evaluation whether a virtual intensive would give you the same result.
